PARTICIPATING WINERIES APPELLATIONS
Hamilton Russell Vineyards, one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World.
One of South Africa’s most awarded boutique wine estates lies in a scenic valley, just an hour and a half from Cape Town, called Hemel-en-Aarde. . Framed by great fod mountains and breath-taking ocean views, it is one of the coolest wine-making regions in the Cape, with duplex soil structures and sun-facing slopes. The promise of the unique terroir is harnessed by winemaker Peter Finlayson in slow-ripened, flavour-rich wines of exceptional quality.
Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Drive up the Hemel-en-Aarde Pass leaving the busy beaches far below and slowly, slowly this pristine wine valley will envelop you in stillness and wonder. Turn left towards the De Bos dam and around a bend, a low slung building appears on the horizon, perched on a sweeping landscape and anchored under a large tree.
This is the Frame House. A wooden structure housing the wine tasting venue belonging to Bosman Family Vineyards, on their farm in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus.
Newton Johnson Vineyards is owned and managed by the Newton Johnson family. The farm is based in the upper Hemel en Aarde Valley. This is a popular tourist destination, famous for some of the most spectacular land-based whale watching in the world lush indigenous fynbos, a floral kingdom, home to 1500 species and exclusive to the Cape, mountain walks and bike trails. Led by Dave, a Cape Wine Master with a thesis on Pinot Noir, and his wife, Felicity (nee Newton), the Newton Johnson family moved to the Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley in 1995, built a cellar and started planting vines shortly thereafter. This enthusiasm for wine and Pinot noir in particular, was passed on to and eagerly adopted by his sons, Bevan and Gordon.
With our vines planted in 1999, Restless River has some of the oldest cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The soils are extremely diverse resulting in each block being quite unique. The Valley is well renowned for its cooler climate. The farm is only 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, and with the vineyards at 870ft, the temperature is a further couple of degrees cooler. Although challenging, these are great conditions for making good wine.
Sumaridge Estate Wines, proudly owned by the Bellingham Turner family, lies gracefully between two imposing mountain ranges in the Western Cape’s Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, with commanding views stretching to Walker Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. The original farm began in 1997, with a small area of only 44 acres for the now-famous wines to be produced upon. Since the new owners took over the farm in 2008, the vineyards have grown to encompass 104 acres, with no signs of slowing. The farm itself has aimed at giving an “Earthly Expression portrayed to Heavenly Effect” with its majestic and beautiful main building overlooking vineyards and a private dam. From this vantage point visitors are able to enjoy a unique tasting experience whilst taking in the history and beauty of the area.
Greek for “a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation”, Ataraxia lives up to the hype. Aptly called The Skyfields, Ataraxia Wines is perfectly positioned on a commanding rise in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde wine-growing area. Just a short distance from the coastal village of Hermanus, a picture-perfect drive brings you to the most elevated part of these winelands. Here you can experience jaw-dropping vineyard, valley and mountain views: all from our chapel-like Wine Lounge®, while sampling some of the most exciting wines South Africa has to offer.
Nestled in the picturesque mountains of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley lies our beautiful and bright wine estate, La Vierge. Without boasting too much, we’re proud to be the home of some of the most tantalising wines in the valley – which we aim to continuously achieve here. Thanks to our continued dedication, it’s no wonder that our wines are desired world-wide. So why not add some of our bottles to your collection?
When in 2002 Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin took up the challenge of establishing a winery in a remote corner of the Walker Bay Wine Region, they did so with the courage of their conviction. The 40 hectares of undulating land on the lofty Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge had never been planted to vines before, but recognising the vast potential, they set out with tenacity and determination to transform it into a model wine farm. No easy feat, but then the Swiss-born JC and South African-born Carolyn (née Finlayson) both come from wine pioneering stock spanning at least three generations and two continents!
